Pornography and its Impact on the Young
The proliferation of pornography on the Internet comes as no surprise - whenever humans chance upon a brilliant technological invention, it almost inevitably molds into a tool for sexual gratification. This was the case with the first black and white photographs, the first silent films, and with video cassettes; it is now most definitely the case with the Internet. When Virtual Reality is perfected, we can safely assume it will take the same direction.
But the ease of access to porn which increases exponentially with each technological evolution is a source for grave concern. Research reveals that 8 out of 10 people find it impossible to avoid seeing pornographic images even when using the Internet for entirely unrelated purposes.
The manner in which violent and degrading pornography has become the mainstream is changing what behavior both boys and girls see as normal and acceptable in an intimate relationship. Experts lament that internet pornography is creating a generation of individuals who will never be able to have a normal, healthy sexual relationship with any partner. This is due to the unrealistic body images, scenarios and tolerance levels that are perpetuated by the porn videos.
Perhaps the most troubling effect is the perpetuation of the Rape Myth, which asserts that women are responsible if they get raped. The overabundance of porn that plays into this fantasy reinforces it in the minds of both males and females too young to know any better.
A popular genre is the gangbang. In this, one individual is subjected to multiple penetrations and sexual contact with multiple partners. In mainstream porn, that individual is exclusively female and the others all male. She often endures violent acts like slaps, pulled hair, being spat on and degraded verbally. There is some research that draws a parallel between the hatred of females by gay men and a gangbang where multiple naked men come into constant physical contact with each other while victimizing a single female.
Other research shows that males who watch such violent pornography are the most likely to engage in forcing a woman to commit sexual acts against her will.
The world of fantasy that captures the adolescent mind through pornography is free of the realities of life. AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, psychological problems and loneliness because of unrealistic sexual expectations do not exist in porn, but they all exist in real life.
It seems that the sex life - and the mental and physical health - of the average teenager growing up today is in the hands of a small group of pornographers who pay no mind to consequences when they reap in billions of dollars of profits.
